Day 1: St Jean Pied de Port to Refuge Orisson
St Jean Pied de Port
Had a lovely breakfast at the hotel, then caught the train to St Jean Pied de Port. Checked in at the Pilgrim office, bought some trekking poles and a sandwich and started walking. Short day today, just 5 miles. Today and tomorrow I hike up and over the Pyrenees. I’ll cross the border into Spain tomorrow morning.
Scenery was fabulous today! Passed a few fellow pilgrims on the way but mostly hiked alone. Nice to hike at my own pace. I’m sure I’ll be more social some days, but not feeling the need today.
Staying at Refuge Orisson tonight. Sharing a room with folks from Denmark, France, and Australia.
View from Orisson
Communal pilgrim dinner is a tradition at Orisson. I ate with people from six different continents and thirteen countries.
