I decided to mark my 50th birthday by going on a 50-mile backpacking trip. Fortunately, I had recently moved to the Pacific Northwest and taking up with a group of trail runners. These fabulous women, all seasoned backpackers, agreed to accompany me. On our first trip, we hiked 54 miles through the Olympic National Park. And we loved it so much, we've taken at least one backpacking trip every year since then.
