Day 11: Villafranca Montes de Oca to Cardeñuela Riopico

Left Villafranca Montes de Oca at sunrise. Hiked up and over the hills for a few miles before beginning the gradual descent toward the city of Burgos.

At the top of the hill is a monument dedicated to men from Burgos who were executed for opposing General Franco during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

On a less sober note, I love the random snack stops. This guy had jazz music playing, and he was so delightfully engaging.

Had to have a second breakfast in Agés, of course!

Also passed through Atapuerca, a village famous for its prehistoric archaeological sites.

Random sites along the way:

Totem poles?

A congregation of cows

Animal art (zoom in on painting in upper right)

American politics followed me to Spain. I’ve actually been surprised at how closely Europeans follow our presidential election and governmental antics. Our politics affect them pretty directly, and let’s just say that they have some pretty strong opinions against one of the candidates.

Random cross on a hill (with random sneakers hanging on the cross). This is a spiritual pilgrimage, after all.

If you look closely, you can see that someone arranged rocks in concentric circles (or maybe a swirl). I’d love to see this from above.

Burgos in the distance. I’ll be there midday tomorrow.

Albergue in Cardeñuela Riopico is bustling.

Pilgrim dinner!

Took a little meditation time in the 16th century church next door.

Goodnight Cardeñuelos Riopico!
