Day 24: Trabadelo to Fonfría
After whining for a couple of days, I promised myself that I would adjust my attitude today. God and the Camino made that very easy. Splendid scenery, fabulous weather. Today restored my soul.
Started the day well before dawn, walking by flashlight. May or may not have gotten scared by my own shadow, thinking it was a dog beside me. We’ll save the safety discussion for another time…
Walked along the river in the fog before beginning the climb to O Cebreiro, passing through several charming villages along the way, including one with the best napolitana (think chocolate-filled croissant) I’ve had since arriving in Spain.
Lots of climbing today, but I’m happiest in the mountains, and the path was pretty, so no complaints here.
Crossed from Castilla y León into the autonomous community (think state) of Galicia. I’m now less than 100 miles from Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia and my destination.
Made a new pilgrim friend on O Cebreiro before heading down the other side of the mountain.
More stunning vistas on my way to Fonfría.
And another pilgrim friend
True pilgrim feet on this guy
Tonight’s albergue is one of the best I’ve stayed in so far. Comfortable and clean, great showers, yummy pilgrim dinner. And I met another person who knows Montesano. That’s three people so far in the Camino that know the tiny town I live in.
On a more sober note, a man had a heart attack and died on the trail today. The police and body were still there when I walked by. I’m sure he died doing something he loved, maybe fulfilling a dream, but it’s heartbreaking for his family.
